About this idea

If your child is always borrowing the phone to take pictures, photography can become a business. Pets, flowers, sunsets and local landmarks all make prints people love.

It teaches an artist’s eye (light, framing, patience) and the business of turning one photo into many products.

A great fit for

  • Kids who notice beautiful things
  • Patient observers
  • Families with a phone or camera at home

What parents do

Parent involvement: ModerateRegular help with some steps, printing or online sales

  • Order prints
  • Arrange any pet photo sessions with people you know
  • Handle any online sales

Your child: about 3 hours a week making, selling and planning once it’s up and running.

Step by step

  1. Choose a theme

Pick one subject to start, like pets, flowers or your town. A themed set looks professional.

  2. Learn the basics

Practice using natural light, getting down to the subject’s level and filling the frame.

  3. Pick your 10 best

Take lots of photos and choose the 10 best together. Edit them simply: crop, brighten, straighten.

  4. Print and mount

Order prints, mount them on cardstock and put them in clear sleeves.

  5. Offer pet sessions

Once you have samples, offer short pet photo sessions to neighbors you know.

Costs & pricing example

Profit per print

$4.45

How we worked out the cost of one print
  • Print$0.30
  • Mount and sleeve$0.25

If your child sells 30 prints at $5, that’s $150 in sales and about $133.50 profit after materials. The $77 startup cost, including a first market table, is earned back after about 18 prints.

Photo cards sell well in packs. Pet photo sessions for neighbors can be $15–20 including two prints.

These numbers are illustrative examples, not guaranteed earnings. Prices vary by supplier and location.

A display of prints draws people in.

  • A parent-run online shop

    For prints or digital downloads.

Skills your child will build

  • Photo editing
  • Curating a collection
  • Customer service

Common challenges

Blurry photos
Try this: Hold the phone with two hands, tap to focus and shoot in good light. A small tripod helps.
Pets won’t sit still
Try this: Use treats and toys, and take lots of shots. Pet photographers keep only a few from every session.

Safety & parent notes

  • Online, parent-run
  • Only photograph people with their permission, and never photograph other children without their parents’ consent.
  • Remove location data from photos before sharing them online, and don’t post photos that show your home or school.

A note for parents

Photography rewards patience. Go on “photo walks” together and let your child choose what’s beautiful, then help them pick the best shots.
