About this idea

A blog is a place to share what you know: recipes, Lego builds, pet care tips or book reviews. It builds writing skills and confidence, and over time an audience.

Ad income needs adult accounts and a large audience, so the realistic way for a young blogger to earn is selling something small, like printable coloring pages, recipe cards or game sheets, through a shop a parent runs.

A great fit for

  • Kids who love writing or explaining things
  • Experts in a hobby
  • Families comfortable managing an online presence

What parents do

Parent involvement: HighSupervising every session or going along on every job

  • Own the blog and shop accounts
  • Review every post before it’s published
  • Turn off or moderate comments
  • Handle all sales and payments

Your child: about 3 hours a week making, selling and planning once it’s up and running.

Step by step

  1. Pick one topic

Choose something your child loves and knows a lot about. A narrow topic, like “easy recipes kids can make,” is easier to write about than “everything.”

  2. Set it up together

A parent creates the blog. Use a first name or pen name only, and no photos that show your child’s face, school or home.

  3. Write five posts

Aim for five posts before sharing the blog. Each one should teach or share one thing.

  4. Create a printable

Design a simple printable related to the topic, like recipe cards or a coloring page, and save it as a PDF.

  5. Open a shop

A parent lists the printable on a digital download shop and links it from the blog.

How we worked out the cost of one printable pack
  • Payment and shop fees (estimate)$0.40

If your child sells 30 printables pack at $3, that’s $90 in sales and about $78 profit after materials.

Digital products cost almost nothing to “make” again, so every extra sale is mostly profit.

These numbers are illustrative examples, not guaranteed earnings. Prices vary by supplier and location.

Where to sell

Common challenges

Running out of ideas
Try this: Keep a list of questions friends ask about the topic. Each one is a post.
Slow growth
Try this: Blogs grow slowly. Celebrate posts written, not visitors counted.

Safety & parent notes

  • Online, parent-run
  • Blogs and online shops require adult accounts. A parent should own and manage them.
  • Never share your child’s full name, photo, school, location or schedule.
  • Turn comments off or moderate them, and only use images you made or have the right to use.

A note for parents

Blogging is a wonderful way to build writing skills. Keep the focus on making something your child is proud of, and treat any sales as a bonus.
